Public service in Athens takes next step (Brief)

By Courtney M. Holbrook

ATHENS, Ga--The Russell Political Science Library presents “Public Service: The Next Step,” a follow-up to its “Unnatural Causes” series on June 7.

“Unnatural Causes” is a 7-part video and lecture series demonstrating connections between poverty and healthcare. Various speakers participated in audience and panel discussions.

“It really takes a look at the social determinants of health,” said Jill Severn, Director of the Russell Forum for Civil Rights in Georgia. “It forces Athenians to really be engaged in what's going on around them.”

The follow-up meeting is the next step. It will discuss how Athens' residents can use lessons from the series to help their communities.

“Public Service: the Next Step” will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Athens Regional Library on Baxter.

This looks like a good event to profile. For the full story it would be good to get more information about the purpose of the event into the lead. The titles of these events are less important than what they're actually about -- that's how people will decide if they want to go.

Good job getting the time, date and place of the event into this early brief.
